Thiago Alfaia, Managing Director, is based in Marathon Capital’s Chicago office. He is a corporate finance, project finance, and M&A specialist with more than 20 years of experience in the renewable energy and infrastructure markets. He is an expert in cross-border situations and has successfully originated and executed transactions in multiple international jurisdictions. At Marathon Capital, Thiago advises clients on M&A and private placement engagements globally.
During his 15 years at Marathon Capital, Thiago has worked on more than 20 successful transactions including advising Serena (SRNA3:BZ) in its successful entry into the US market with the acquisition and project financing of Goodnight wind project in Texas, advising Engie in its joint venture with Tokyo Gas for a 900 MW platform in Mexico, the sale of Canadian Solar’s Mexican portfolio to Kepco and Sprott, the sale of Matrix Renewable’s solar portfolio in Colombia, advising CEi in its joint venture around 18 operating hydro plants and 13GW solar portfolio with Nebras Power in Brazil, and the sale of Distributed Power Partner’s portfolio of 20 PMGD projects in Chile. He also led one of Marathon Capital's landmark transactions: the successful equity capital raise and project financing of Mexico Power Group’s La Bufa 1 Wind Farm, with “Deal of the Year” honors in both Mexico and the US. Other noteworthy transactions are the sale of Suzlon’s 240 MW Big Sky Project to EverPower, the equity and construction financing of the 30 MW Patua Geothermal Project, the sale of Coram Energy Group’s 124 MW portfolio of operating wind projects in California to Brookfield, and the sale of Central Hudson’s Shirley Wind Project to Duke Energy.
Thiago has previously worked in various project finance and M&A assignments in the Brazilian energy industry including the valuation and sale processes of an electricity transmission company, a 300 MW coal and gas-fired thermal power generation project, and a 600 MW hydropower plant in addition to co-founding a successful energy trading business in the country.
Thiago is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Society and received his MBA with high honors and with concentrations in Accounting, Analytic Finance, and Entrepreneurship from the University of Chicago. Thiago holds his Series 7, 63, and 79 licenses.
